Olive the Other Reindeer by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh

Genre: Fanciful Fiction
Themes: Determination, Helping Others, Christmas
Grade Level: K-2
Curriculum Connections: English (words and misunderstandings, compare and contrast), Religion (Christmas, Using one's gifts)

On her daily walk at Christmastime, Olive hears people singing, "All of the other reindeer." Singing along, she suddenly realizes she is singing, "Olive the other reindeer." Knowing the Christmas is the time when all reindeer report to the North Pole, Olive leaves immediately. She's not the best flyer, nor does she fit well into the reins, but Olive's talents - chewing, hearing, howling, fetching, and sniffing - end up being exactly what Santa Claus needs.

Classroom Suggestions:

1. Use in conjunction with Miss Alaineus about misunderstanding words.

2. Look at everyone's unique talents and how God can use them even in odd situations - like a dog saving Santa and his reindeer.

3. Olive the Other Reindeer can be used with older students as well. View the animated television show based on the book and write a compare and contrast paragraph. Characters are expanded and some are added including Schnitzel, Blitzen's flightless and bitter brother.
